Fuji is one of the oldest bicycle companies in the world. Established in 1899 as a Japanese trading company it moved into bicycle manufacturing and by the 1920s was Japan's most popular bicycle.

In 1971 Fuji set up its own company in the US to distribute what was, by then, a very highly regarded brand. But Fuji's specialty was road bikes and when the mountain bike boom of the 1980s came, the company did not take advantage of the opportunity. Worse, the rising value of the Japanese Yen made the Japanese-produced Fujis more difficult to sell against Taiwan-made product.

After a bankruptcy and reorganization, Fuji is now owned by Advanced Sports International and produces its well-made bikes in Poland, Taiwan and China.

In professional racing, Fujis are ridden by the Caja Rural-Seguros RGA team.
