Karl Altenburger was a professional bike racer in the 1930s. He most notable victory was winning the fifth stage of the 1933 Tour of Switzerland. In 1935 he developed the first aluminum clincher rim and began producing it in 1936. He went on to manufacture brakes, brake levers and gear shifters. In 1950 he purchased a derailleur patent and began producing what were advanced parallelogram derailleurs for their time. But Altenburger preferred to concentrate on brake production, notably his Synchron caliper, a forerunner of Shimano's dual-pivot design.

Altenburger was purchased by another German firm in 1953. The company appears to have closed its doors in 1991.
