The "Dirt Research" name was originally Torelli Import's. Torelli invented the name and had the graphics designed for the mountain bike that Torelli had Yokota produce in 1988. Torelli imported only a couple of containers of Dirt Research mountain bikes before abandoning the project to concentrate on road bikes. Since Torelli never trademarked the brand Yokota used the brand for its own products, using a variation of the original Dirt Research graphics.
